The term "Donut Chart" refers to a pie chart that has been given the appearance of a donut by adding a "White Circle" to the centre. It is used to conduct part-to-whole analysis, also known as proportion analysis, on the data. It aids in our comprehension of the data's make-up. Analyse, analyse ratios, or analyse compositions.

Let's imagine, for illustration, that the donut below represents a company's whole workforce.

Steps Involved:

  • Create a calculated field named ‘Constant’ (any name can be given) with a constant value of zero (0) in it.

  • Drag the calculated field (Constant) and drop it on the Rows Shelf two times. The first SUM(Constant) field needs to be converted into a Pie Chart and second SUM(Constant) field, which needs to be converted into a

  • Go to the Marks Card of the first SUM(Constant) field, and change the Mark Type to “Pie”. Drag ‘Region’ to the ‘Colour’ Shelf and ‘Profit’ to the ‘Size’ shelf. Pie Chart representing the Profits across different regions is ready. Click on the size shelf and slightly increase the size of the Pie. This way, when the Circle is superimposed on it, it will not get covered by the circle completely. Instead, it will look like the center has been cut out.

  • Go to the Marks Card of the second SUM(Constant) field, change the Mark Type to “Circle”. Drag ‘Profit’ to the ‘Label’ shelf. Change the color of the circle to “White” and move the Label to the middle of the circle.

    To change the color, click on the Colour shelf and choose white color. To center theLabel, click on the Label shelf and choose Label Alignment under vertical as “Middle”.

  • Use the concept of “Dual Axis” to superimpose the ‘Circle’ of the ‘Pie’ to make it look like a Donut. For this, click on the drop-down icon of the second SUM(Constant) pill on the Rows shelf and select the “Dual Axis” option on the drop-down menu.

  • Donut Chart is now ready

  • You might want to fine-tune it a little by getting rid of the Header and the zero Lines. Also, change the fit to “Entire View” to make the Donut center itself on the canvas.
